Dakota Willimon Interior Design

Dakota Willimon has loved homes, art and design from a young age. Growing up, she would beg her mother to go look at old houses on their travels. She majored in Art History at Wofford College, then worked at a design firm in Louisville, Kentucky before taking at job at Jenny Wolf Interiors in New York. As a Senior Designer with Jenny Wolf, Dakota honed her skills while working on large scale projects surrounded by beauty and talent. She credits her incredible teachers and mentors for the experiences that lead her to launch her own firm in 2019.

Dakota Willimon Interiors portrays a timeless, classic style with a splash of fun. Growing up in the south Dakota has always loved the classical elements in architecture and loves seeing the way furnishings, colors, and fabrics are all paired in homes. Every project has its own identity, and at the end of the day her ultimate goal is for clients to love their home. Her spaces are sophisticated, yet welcoming and comfortable.

What inspires you today? Who are your design "crushes" or favorite instagram accounts for inspiration?

Overall I draw inspiration from travels, and the outside world around me. I recently visited Mexico City and the colors and architecture were so inspiring. I love seeing different cultures and the way people live. There are so many talented designers, and every day I find accounts and inspiration on instagram and perusing magazines. I really admire Markham Roberts, Gil Schaffer, Thom Scheer, Ashley Whittaker, and Jenny Wolf, for their layered and collected sensibilities to name a few.

What do you love most about including original art in your designs?

The artwork someone chooses to hang int heir home can say so much about them...their interests, travels and passions. Art can transform a space while also taking you to a memory or feeling in an instant. I love working with clients to find the perfect piece of art for their space, or giving new life to an existing painting with a new location or a new frame. Original art is personal, but I think it is an investment that makes a huge impact on a home.

Dream Project?

A magnificent old house in the country or a pied-a-terre in a city with high ceilings, beautiful moldings, layered with stunning furnishings, fabulous art, and rich textiles that exemplify the history of the home.

Favorite thing about living in the south?

What is not to love about the South...the history, the traditions, the ease of life surrounded by warm and welcoming people. My family is originally from South Carolina, and moving back here makes me feel at home. I love the meaning of southern hospitality and entertaining and how gracious people are. Plus we have shrimp and grits…what more could you ask for.
